Lake McConaughy AKA “Big Mac” is a popular destination for us land-locked individuals who need to visit the beach from time to time. Just a 3 1/2 hour drive from Denver, it’s situated in Ogallala, NE right outside of the Northeastern Colorado state lines.

We took a short family vacation there this summer. The kids loved the white sandy beaches and wildlife. Owen and his cousin Jonah caught a ton of frogs (TOO MANY IN FACT), and Belle found a baby fish in the lake.
Our dog Copper caught a frog too, but I’m not going to tell you what he did with it. *EEK*
2nd Cousin Jonah and a frog ^^
At Big Mac, you’re allowed to camp on the beach and have bonfires. They also have campgrounds with access to showers, and nice places for RV’s with hook ups to electricity, sewer, and water.
The lake is HUGE.. perfect for cruising on the boat and still maintaining a safe distance from other boaters.
We had to pay a $15 non-resident’s boater fee for the annual decal. Worth every penny. …Jason exploring the lake^^
My parents relaxing on the boat …
My cousin Kristen and her son Tyler getting splashed- the water was choppy that day..
Belle and her cousin Anna^^ my daughter can sleep anywhere!!
The kids played on beach for 3 days straight.. there were a total of 6 cousins together **ANOTHER EEK**
Lake McConaughy is a great destination for families. They even put on a “Kites and Castles” festival every summer (it gets too crowded for me, 6 cousins was enough..). I recommend checking this place out if you’re local to the area and wanting to try something different for CHEAP!
Even the dog had a blast 🙂
