I think I was in middle school when I watched my science teacher put a can of sweetened condensed milk into a pot of boiling water.  After several minutes he removed the can and asked a volunteer to taste what he made.  The volunteer was in luck because he had just made Caramel!

He used science to convert condensed milk into candy.  Needless to say, I was very fascinated.  There’s science behind candy making and baking so as with this caramel sauce, you need to stick to the recipe. 🙂

Years ago I found a few recipes on how to make caramels in the microwave, and how to make caramels on the stove-top.  Those recipes helped me understand the basic concepts of how to make caramel anything.

Therefore, I created this caramel sauce and it’s delish.  DELISH I said!!  It’s super easy to whip up, taking less than 10 minutes, and only requires a few ingredients.

Let’s get started!

On medium-high heat mix the butter and both sugars together.

Keep going, stirring constantly.

Stirring constantly, boil for two minutes.  Make sure to go the full two minutes so you dissolve the sugar granules all the way.

Once the two minutes are up, reduce the heat to medium-low and stir in the sweetened condensed milk.

Then add a teaspoon of vanilla…

And a pinch of salt.  That’s it! You’re done!!

This makes 16 ounces – the perfect amount to fit into a pint-sized jar!

Here’s a very dramatic picture of the sauce.

This is what happens when you tell the kids they can put the sauce in their cups by themselves.  It made a cute picture I suppose. 🙂

Uses:  Ice cream topping, caramel lattes, makes a great dip for sliced apples and other fruit, drizzle over apple crisp, drizzle over oatmeal…. and it also makes a great gift to others!

Quick Caramel Sauce

  • 3/4 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) Butter
  • 1 14 ounce can Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt

In a sauce pan on medium-high heat mix together the butter and both sugars.  Continue to mix until boiling.  Boil for a solid 2 minutes to make sure you melt all of the sugar granules, STIRRING CONSTANTLY!  🙂

Now reduce the heat to medium-low and add the can of sweetened condensed milk continuing to stir until mixed together.  Lastly, mix in the teaspoon of vanilla and a pinch of salt.  That’s it, you’re done!

Store in the fridge.  To reheat use the microwave setting on low.

Makes one pint; 16 ounces.  xoxo
